Local support

ACTS does not just rely on the international community to help us fundraise for the many children who need an education.

Here in Mombasa, we have generous support from the local community, which comes in many shapes and formstyle, even from the children in the local schools. ACTS began a ‘Children helping children’ programme over five years ago and since then the support has been fantastic with the more privileged children raising significant funds each year to help those for whom education cannot be taken for granted. Just have a look at the activities on this page to see what the local children of Mombasa are doing for each other……

Here are just some of the many children who have benefited from the annual sponsored read held in Mombasa. Children from 11 schools get sponsorship to read as many pages as they can and all the money raised goes to pay for books to be used in the schools which ACTS supports. Children as young as 4 enter this fantastic sponsored event and in the 2003 sponsored read they managed to raise an amazing Ksh 488,470 which is equivalent to approx GBP3,723. or EUR 5,324.

The benefit that the children in the ACTS supported schools get from this annual supply of books is immeasurable. As you can see from the picture on the right, the money buys text books for all subjects and all ages as well as story books for the younger children. Without this supply of books the resources that the teachers can rely on are negligible and the education offered can suffer as a result. Each year, we try to involve as many children as possible in the hope that the resulting books will reach many children in Mombasa in years to come.
